Bamrauli airport in Allahabad

Flights to Allahabad arrive at Allahabad airport and it is connected by the Air India Regional flights to Delhi. At present, Air India Regional and Spicejet are the only two air services operating from this airport. Air India operates two direct flights to Delhi on four days a week. On the remaining days, Spicejet operates direct flights to Delhi on a daily basis. From September 9, 2013, Alliance Air – which is a subsidiary of Air India – has begun operating on the Allahabad-Mumbai sector. As a consequence of increasing demand for air traffic, other operators are also eager to begin services from this air base although the capacity of the airport to operate so many flights is questionable.

History of Allahabad Airport

The Bamrauli Air Force Base became functional since 1966. It was the central air command among 5 commands operations in the Air Force. Earlier, it was only used for Government and Army purposes. From September 2013, it has been opened for civil aviation after Air India launched flights from Allahabad to Mumbai.

Facilities at Allahabad Airport

At present, Night landing facility is not available at this air terminal. However, following a central command clearance, the installation of an ILS system is going on as a part of upgrading the air base. The survey for this is under completion. As a part of upgrading of its services in 2011, the airport now boasts of DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) and VOR (Very High Frequency Omni Range). Currently, the airport is witnessing a further upgrading of its existing facilities and the construction of a new terminal. Once this is completed, the air base would be able to handle many more flights and even big aircrafts. District authorities are also collaborating with Air Force authorities and Airport Authority of India (AAI) to test night landing facility for big aircrafts.
