History of Minto Park

The park occupies an important place in the history of British India. In the year 1858, Lord Canning read out the famous declaration of Queen Victoria, which officially proclaimed a transfer of power to the Government of Britain from The East India Company, in the spot where this park now stands. This decision was taken right after the Sepoy Mutiny, which occurred as a direct consequence of corruption in the Company, and succeeded in converting India into a ‘Colony’ from a mere ‘Economic Interest Zone.’ In 1910, the Earl of Minto (then Governor-General of India) laid the foundation stone of this this park to commemorate the transfer of power that happened 52 years ago at the same spot. Thereby, it officially came to be known as “Minto Park.”
