Allahabad, also known as the city of Prime Ministers is the second oldest city in India and plays a key role in Hindu scriptures. Located at the confluence of the rivers Ganga, Saraswati and Yamuna it was the place where the holy scriptures, the Vedas, were born as well as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Apart from its important role in mythology there are many places to visit in the city and a host of things one can occupy oneself with both during the day and at night.
As far as food goes Allahabad has something for everyone. Since traditionally consuming alcohol isn’t a part of Indian culture, the bars are divided between seedy and cheap local bars usually with an all-male clientele to classier more expensive venues catering to the middle and upper classes. Allahabad has its fair share of both. The larger hotels like Hotel Kanha Shyam and Hotel Milan Palace to name a few have their own bars of course where you can select from a wide range of local and imported alcohol, cocktails included. For those on a tighter budget there are a host of local bars and pubs around the city like the Hasty Tasty at Civil Lines or Maikhana - The Bar.
And although it doesn’t come close to being the party capital of the country, the city has a smattering of night clubs that those wishing to party, dance and drink may visit, Club Stepney and Agni The Club to name a few. Hotel Kanha Shyam has its own nightclub although most clubs do not remain open past 10 p.m.
With all the recent development Allahabad has witnessed, cinema halls and theaters have sprung up all over which, means that you don’t have to go very far to catch the latest Bollywood flick after a long day of exploring this ancient city. Multiplexes like PVR Cinemas and BIG Cinemas play mostly Bollywood movies and Hollywood flicks are few and far between. There are a number of auditoriums one may visit as well like the Allahabad auditorium which hosts lectures and other exhibitions on a frequent basis and stays open late into the evening.
Whether you are deeply religious or travel to Allahabad as a pleasure seeker the city almost always will have something to offer. All you need to do is explore!
