Prayagraj Marathon

Marathon in AllahabadAllahabad is one of the fastest growing cities in India. It is among the largest commercial centres of Uttar Pradesh. Allahabad is often known as the “City of Prime Ministers” as a number of former Prime Ministers of the country have been associated with the city. Indira Marathon is one of the most celebrated annual events of the city. It is held on 19th of November every year in memory of Indira Gandhi, one of the most eminent leaders of India. She was the third Prime Minister of the nation. Indira Marathon is an open marathon. Some of the best athletes of the country compete against each other in the All India prize money Indira Marathon. It is among the longest running events of the country.

History of Indira Marathon


The annual Indira Marathon is a national full marathon organized by District administraton and Sports Directorate. The first ever Indira marathon was held in the year 1985 and was flagged off by Vir Bahadur Singh (then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh). The prizes at the inaugural marathon were distributed by Rajiv Gandhi, who held the position of the Prime Minister of India back then. This prestigious event is a tribute to Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of the country, and takes place on her birth anniversary (November 19).

Prize Money and Route of Indira Marathon


The participants of the marathon cover a distance of 42 kilometers staring from Anand Bhavan which is the ancestral home of the prestigious Nehru-Gandhi family. The marathon course passes through Teliaganj, Mayo Hall crossing, CMP College, Allahabad High Court and Hanuman Temple.
The winners from both women as well as men sections receive an amount of Rs 1,01,000 while the prize money for the first and the second runners up is Rs 50,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.
Consolation prizes are given to each participant who finishes anywhere from the 4th position to the 14th position. Participation certificates are distributed to the participants (from men as well as women categories) who complete the marathon within a certain time limit by the organizers of Indira Marathon.

Preparations for Indira Marathon


The annual Indira Gandhi marathon is one of the most awaited events of the year. People belonging to different age groups, from children to elderly citizens come together to honor the beloved daughter of the nation, Indira Gandhi. Preparations for the marathon start well in advance. The administration of Allahabad takes several measures to make sure that the event is conducted in the best possible way. The roads which are a part of the course for the Indira marathon are repaired in order to avoid any inconvenience for the participants.

The annual Indira Marathon is getting bigger and better with time. Few changes, such as separate tracks for elderly have been made over the past few years. The 29th edition of Indira Gandhi marathon which was held on November 19, 2013 saw the use of electronic chips (as per the International norms) for recording accurate timings of the participants for the very first time.
