History of Allahabad Junction
The construction of Allahabad junction dates long back. It was the British who took the initiative to expand a railway line from Delhi to Howrah in mid-19th century. The first train that halted in Allahabad was in 1859 and it ran from Allahabad to Kanpur. And after a few years in 1864, trains from Howrah to Delhi crossing Allahabad became frequent.A lot of effort and hard work were put behind the construction of the Allahabad junction. In the initial years, coaches of the trains were transported on boats across rover Yamuna on boats. After the old Naini Bridge was erected in 1865-66, trains started running through Yamuna. It was in 1902 after the completion of Curzon Bridge that Allahabad got its first rail connection to the northern side of river Ganges.
