Mosques in Prayagraj

A mosque is a place where the devotees can place their prayers to the Almighty. This is a term which essentially describes the place of worship for the Muslims. However, according to the Islamic belief, every place of worship cannot be termed as a Mosque since the designation and honor is given to only those places of worship which has the capability of meeting few necessary requirements as described in Sunni Figh (a specific conduct as per Quran). Those places which does not meet the requirements and cannot be designated as Mosques are called musallas. Once an area is designated for a mosque, it remains that way till the “Last Day of Judgement”. It is a sacred area and it remains the same till life exists.


Allahabad has always been a place where religious beliefs run in the environment. Again Akbar - the Great, the royal Mughal Emperor, was fond of the city and named the city Allahabad meaning “Garden of Allah” which makes it all the more apt to have beautiful mosques and worship places in the city. Also with a share of more than 12% Muslim population in the city, the importance of mosques in the city grows more.

The best part of these mosques is the fact that they all have a story behind its existence and making. The beauty of the Mosques grows more during the month of Ramzan when the festival finds its true colour in these places.
