Places to See in Allahabad
Allahabad Fort
If you happen to pass through the banks of Yamuna River near Triveni ghat, you will come across a magnificent fort. Build in 1583 by legendary Mughal King Akbar, the Allahabad Fort has a gleam reflection of the traditional Mughal architecture. However, the fort is closed to public and you can only have a glimpse of the same from the banks of Yamuna.
Khusro Bagh
Summers perhaps are the best season to plan a visit to Khusro Bagh. The Bagh was completed under the guidance of King Jahangir in 1662. The garden has a great collection of Mangoes and you can lay hand at some of these if you are lucky enough. Khusro Bagh is also home to graves of Khusro and his wife Shah Begum. Khusro was the son of Jahangir and the King build the garden in his memory.
Anand Bhavan
Allahabad has been witness to the Independence struggle and the legendary Anand Bhawan has been part of the same. The property belonging to Nehru-Gandhi family has now been converted into a museum. The museum is home to numerous relics of the Raj days and stands as a testimony to the hard times which our freedom fighters had seen.
Triveni Sangam
The religious significance of Triveni Sangam cannot be described in words. The place has immense spiritual relevance and the same can be experienced by paying a visit to Triveni Sangam. True to its name, the place is located at the confluence of the holy Ganges, the mighty Yamuna and the legendary Saraswati which used to flow through the place during ancient times. Triveni Sangam hosts the historic Kumbh fairs which are held every six and twelve years at the place.
Jawahar Planetarium
For those having interest in astronomy, a visit to Jawahar Planetarium is highly recommended. The planetarium came into existence in 1979 and provides one with an insight of our solar system.
Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture is held at the Planetarium on November 14th every year and attracts scholars and students alike from all over the region.
All Saints Cathedral
This is one of the Gothic-styled buildings in Allahabad which attracts attention of the devotees and history buffs who visit the place to check out its unique architecture. All Saints Cathedral was designed by British Architect Sir William Emerson in 1871.
Minto Park
Minto Park located centrally in Allahabad is another historic monument which needs to be mentioned. It was at this Minto Park that Earl Canning read out Queen Victoria’s proclamation. This proclamation resulted in the transfer of India from hands of East India Company to the British Government.
